As The Summer Heats Up, So Does Our Stage With Rehearsals For “The Toxic Avenger” – The Musical

As we see it, America seems to be on pretty shaky ground. From gun violence to global warming to book-banning to fascist rhetoric, we seem to have completely lost the ability for civil discourse and human connection. Theatre has always been a vehicle for exploring important, sometimes uncomfortable themes, and our 2024 Season will do just that.

We opened with Philadelphia playwright James Ijames’s powerful and satirical play, KILL, MOVE, PARADISE, which explores the themes of stereotypes, fear, and threat of death that black men of all ages face every day. Next up, we’re confronting corporate greed and its impact on the environment as we stage our premiere musical theatre production, the very funny and pertinent THE TOXIC AVENGER. And we conclude the season with the brutally entertaining GOD OF CARNAGE, a comedy of manners without manners, delving into conflict and human nature.

New Jersey’s first Superhero takes the stage in this monster of a comedy based on the classic cult film.

Based on Lloyd Kaufman’s cult film and winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, The Toxic Avenger is a charming love story and laugh-out-loud musical that has it all: an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey mayor and two guys who play… well, everyone else … bullies, mobsters, old ladies and stiletto-wearing back up singers. With book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics by David Bryan, the show also features the most memorable and unbelievable duet you’ll ever see on any stage.

It’s a toxic love story with an environmental twist! The Toxic Avenger will leave you laughing in the aisles as it rocks the house. Featuring a wailin’ rock score, this comical musical has something for everyone to enjoy.

The Toxic Avenger is a glorious schticky, tongue-in-cheek musical in no danger of taking itself too seriously and reveling in the bawdy camp of its source material.  — DC Theatre Arts

A playground altercation between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of Brooklyn parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions emerge, and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters.

The area’s hottest “off-broadway” theatre

The Waterfront South Theatre, located just a block west of Broadway and Ferry Avenues in Camden’s historic Waterfront South neighborhood, is the first free-standing theatre built in Camden, New Jersey, in more than 100 years. This gorgeous state-of-the-art theater was designed to be reminiscent of Walt’s Cafe, the bar that once stood on this corner until 1967. Thanks to the Heart of Camden, The Domenica Foundation, Ignarri Lummis Architects, and others, this grand space has been home to South Camden Theatre Company since the fall of 2010.
