We open our production with “The Case of the Crushed Petunias”, a short one-act play written for Helen Hayes in 1941; just before the United States entry into World War II. We bring it to you with high school and college actors making their professional debuts on our stage here in Waterfront South. At this time, short plays were used as “curtain-raisers” that were performed before a full-length play. We revive that tradition at SCTC by following with a staged reading of “The Glass Menagerie” directed by “Suddenly, Last Summer” director Connie Norwood and featuring an African American cast. This play is usually produced with Caucasian actors but we bringing you this non-traditional cast to further explore the play’s relevance to young and non-white audiences. We’ll then look for your feedback in our short, post-show discussion moderated by STAGE magazine critic Jack Shaw.
