SCTC Announces 2018 Season

SOUTH CAMDEN THEATRE COMPANY PLANS TO CELEBRATE FEMALE PLAYWRIGHTS WITH FOUR PRODUCTIONS DURING THEIR 2018 SEASON

South Camden Theatre Company to produce two regional premieres, one world premiere and one show by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Lynn Nottage.

Camden, New Jersey—July 11, 2017— South Camden Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Raymond Croce, Sr. has announced his first, full season since being named as Interim Artistic Director for the Company. His plans call for four productions during the new 2018 season.

Mr. Croce made the choice to celebrate women as playwrights for the 2018 season. He states, “Women surface as playwrights when the conditions are right. The way I see it, the current political movement includes a strong feminist component and revolutions in theater itself make it possible for women to seize the time and make their own mark.”

“This choice was also made because there are now two female playwrights on Broadway. They are two of the nation’s pre-eminent playwrights. Each has won nearly every award their field has to offer, including the Pulitzer Prize. Each has written works that are staged around the world and have become required reading in college classes. And each has earned an admired position in educational institutions. Both Paula Vogel and Lynn Nottage’s work has finally broken through Broadway’s long-held male dominance.”

South Camden Theatre Company is pleased to present four wonderful female playwrights on our stage.

THE SAVANNAH SIPPING SOCIETY — A REGIONAL PREMIERE BY JONES/HOPE/WOOTEN

Four unique, Southern women, all needing a change from the monotony of their daily lives, are drawn together by fate and an impromptu happy hour in this delightful, laugh-a-minute comedy. Join them as they decide it’s high time to reclaim the zest for life they’ve lost over the years. The Savannah Sipping Society will be directed by Randall McCann. The show runs from February 9-February 25, 2018.

ARTEMISIA — A WORLD PREMIERE BY PHILADELPHIAN LEE KISZONAS

Artemisia Gentileschi was one of the most accomplished female, Italian Baroque painters of her time. In this World Premiere, travel back to 1610 in Venice, Italy to hear her story. Artemisia was written and is being directed by Philadelphian, Lee Kiszonas. The show runs from May 4-May 20, 2018.

BY THE WATER — A REGIONAL PREMIERE BY SHARYN ROTHSTEIN

The effects of Hurricane Sandy were still felt “down-the-shore” long after the flood waters had receded. This heartfelt story of a couple and their family will grip you as they deal with this natural disaster and their failing community. By The Water was written by Sharyn Rothstein and will be directed by Scott Grumling. The show runs from September 7-September 23, 2018.

CRUMBS FROM THE TABLE OF JOY — BY TWO-TIME PULITZER PRIZE WINNING PLAYWRIGHT LYNN NOTTAGE

1950 America is dealing with the after effects of World War II, the start of the Cold War, and bracing itself for the Civil Rights movement. Crumbs From The Table of Joy is a memory play told through Ernestine, a seventeen year old, African-American woman whose family is dealing with their own realities of change. After the death of his wife, Godfrey Crump finds religion and decides to move his family to Brooklyn. It starts out with he and his daughters, they are soon joined by Godfrey’s wife’s sister, a Communist, and his new wife, Gerte, a German woman he met on the subway. “Crumbs” is being directed by Connie Norwood. The show runs from November 2-November 18, 2018.

South Camden Theatre Company’s Board of Trustees is also excited about this new direction of shows chosen by Mr. Croce. The Board is hopeful that this new season brings a renewed focus on the company and the work we are doing in Camden. Please read more online at: www.southcamdentheatre.org.
