"Slave Narratives Revisited — a celebration of freedom"
By Ed Shockley
Directed by lary moten
This show was a fascinating montage of voices, experiences, and the resilience of captured Africans and their survival stories in these United States. Two excellent actors, Ed Shockley and lary moten, provided firsthand accounts of these individual experiences and bring this “peculiar institution” to life.
Slave Narratives Revisited was a steady drumbeat of recognition and awareness to serve up these precious nuggets of history. These experiences must not be shelved away as irrelevant and forgotten. Slavery shaped the look, fortunes and realities of every aspect of this country and "Slave Narratives Revisited" helps us work through the horrific passages to get to the Celebration of Freedom together.
This show was produced at our Sacred Heart Church basement theatre on October 30, 31 and November 1, 2009. Turn out was light due to the Halloween holiday and the fact that the Phillies were in the World Series. Those who did attend had high praise for the power of the performances and the show itself.
